WHAT’S HAPPENING

  • Jennifer Lopez isn’t the only Latina training as a triathlete. Latinas are supporting each other’s athletic efforts through Las Hermanas triathlon team.
  • Noticing the dearth of Latinas at the starting or finishing lines of triathlons she participated in, Denise Perez of Denver, Colo. formed Las Hermanas (the sisters) triathlon team, a training and support group for women interested in the three-sport combination of swimming, cycling and running.
  • Members, who range from their 20s to their 60s, include novices just learning to swim or cycle to accomplished athletes who have completed several races. Hermanas groups have sprung up in Seattle, Miami, Los Angeles and Puerto Rico. The 2007 Seattle Danskin was their first major event (DenverPost.com 7.8.08).

WHAT THIS MEANS TO BUSINESS

  • A desire to get into shape and push themselves to try something new drives some Latinas to get involved in athletic and fitness programs and events. Having the support of other mujeres, both beginners and veterans, helps make their goals more attainable.
  • There are many active Latinas who can use advice and encouragement from trusted athletic and fitness brands.
