WHAT’S HAPPENING
- What’s better than keeping the kids close to home? Getting them to stay home; so helicopter ‘rents are enticing tweens and teens to stay in by reviving the rec room with some au courant upgrades (New York Times 7.10.08).
- The modern version may be unrecognizable to some; Gran’s old sofa and the green shag carpet have been stripped out for stylish furnishings and luxe amenities like kitchenettes.
- Target and Urban Outfitters are targeting tweens and teens with cheap-n-chic rec-friendly furniture that makes it fashionable to hang out at home.
- To outfit the rec room, PB Teen by Pottery Barn offers teen-style entertaining furniture like laidback sofas and torqued media storage.
WHAT THIS MEANS TO BUSINESS
- Parents have cellphones and GPS devices to keep tabs on the tweens and teens, but nothing says “I want to know where you are and what you’re doing” like providing a reason to stay home: a tricked-out rec room.
- Young Millennials may be taking their party cues from their at-home entertaining parents.
