A toast to the recession

WHAT’S HAPPENING

  • When life hands you an economic meltdown, drink wine. That was the thought process behind Recession Red and Recession White, a new line of low-cost wines from California-based Concannon Vineyard.
  • The company offers two Recession Reds (a Merlot and a Cabernet Sauvignon) and one Recession White (Chardonnay) for about $5 a bottle.
  • Luckily for oenophiles, Concannon didn’t skimp on the quality of the wine to cut the price. Instead, the savings come from using recycled synthetic closures in place of corks and pouring the booze into a lighter bottle, which reduces shipping costs (Slashfood.com 10.3.08).

WHAT THIS MEANS TO BUSINESS

  • Watching the Dow’s roller-coaster ride is enough to drive anyone to drink. Making that booze more affordable (and palatable) has mass appeal right now.
  • Thanks to the popularity of Two Buck Chuck, consumers know that pretty decent wine can be created on the cheap.
  • The economic downturn is serious and consumers are craving something to lighten the mood. Cheap, tasty wines with cartoony labels aren’t going to fix things, but they are a fun distraction.
