OF NOTE: Time v. money; Walmart; pranking; middle class shoplifters; mileage tax (11.18.09)

-What has more power over consumer choices: time or money?

-With great power comes great responsibility. Wal-Mart continues its green efforts, with something to show for it in more than 20 videos highlighting sustainable practices.

-More than Moore: The Yes Men prank corporations and what happens when a company pranks the media.

-Apparently, the U.K. has seen a surge in retail crime due to “The recent uprising of the middle class shoplifter, someone who has turned to theft to sustain their standard of living, and this is driving theft of items such as cosmetics, perfumes and face creams, alcohol, fresh meat, mobile phones, computer games and DVDs as well as small electrical goods like cameras, iPods and personal care gadgets.”

-We recently wrote about California joining 15 other states to offer pay-as-you-drive car insurance. Now the Dutch are trying a similar approach, forgoing vehicle taxes in favor of tracking and taxing how far people drive. For both programs, a tracking device is installed in the car and drivers are rewarded for with discounts for keeping their mileage low. Sounds good, but how many consumers will be willing to sacrifice privacy for a few extra bucks?
