WHAT’S HAPPENING

  • This Christmas season, window dressing takes on an entirely new meaning. “Have a foodie holiday” is the theme at Barneys New York, and the likes of Mario Batali and Bobby Flay will be featured in their notoriously eye-catching windows. “The Gals of Food” will get their due too, with a display dedicated to Ina Garten, Paula Deen and others.
  • The mash-up continues with the Barneys holiday catalog, photographed at Iron Chef America‘s Kitchen Stadium. Other shots by photographer Nobuyoshi Araki show models with raw fish and fruit (Women’s Wear Daily, 10 October 2010).
  • The windows will go “live” on November 16, 2010. Shortly after, on the 28th, Simon Doonan, Barneys creative director, will be a judge on Iron Chef America.

WHAT THIS MEANS TO BUSINESS

  • The cultural power of food is on the rise. Chefs have become tastemakers in so many ways, from gentrifying urban neighborhoods with their restaurants to inspiring the fashion world with their bravura.
  • A cross-category mash-up made in heaven: Barneys introduces Food Network’s 100 million-plus viewers to a new diet of luxury threads; Food Network becomes a little more glamorous by association.
