Woolworths rises from the ashes to pass the parcel

WHAT’S HAPPENING

  • Woolworths, the iconic high street chain that met its demise in 2008, has reappeared as an online family superstore as part of Shop Direct Group, the U.K.’s largest online shopping retailer. In the runup to Christmas, Woolies will fleetingly return to the high street “on tour” to set the Guinness World Record for the largest ever game of pass the parcel (FulhamChronicle.co.uk, 8 November 2010).
  • Kids are being asked to nominate their town for a visit, and the writers of the best letters will be invited to tear one giant layer off the parcel to win top toys for Christmas, valued at £500. Small gifts will be given to the first 100 people who greet Stan and Ollie —Woolies snowmen — as they pass through each town. The stunt hopes to raise awareness amongst British shoppers that Woollies, like Santa, does exist.

WHAT THIS MEANS TO BUSINESS

  • Kids big and small love a parade. The chance to win one of the most-wanted toys for Christmas in a giant game of pass-the-parcel is sure to be a pull, as is the opportunity to take part in a memorable Guinness World Record. It’s family fun and it’s free, and it feeds nostalgia for one of Britain’s favourite (albeit no longer high street) brands.
