The last round’s getting later at the Royal Mail

WHAT’S HAPPENING

  • Missing a delivery could soon be a thing of the past — starting with online shoppers at House of Fraser and L’Occitane who live in the southeast of England (BBCNews.co.uk, 1 November 2010).
  • The Royal Mail is trialling deliveries between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. for six months in response to a customer study which found that 58% of shoppers would buy more online “if they could choose more flexible delivery options”.
  • The Royal Mail is hoping to build business by listening more carefully to consumers’ needs and will add more retailers and regions to the service if it proves successful.

WHAT THIS MEANS TO BUSINESS

  • Time’s a precious commodity and busy consumers want the power to call the shots.
  • If businesses can’t deliver the goods, consumers aren’t always going to hang around until they can. Services tailored to them and their pressurised lifestyles win out over the competition.
